Description Variétale

Variété à cœur très serré et feuilles bouclées. Excellente homogénéité, assez rustique, résistante à la montée à graines. Le blanchissement se fait facilement.

Semis

Semer en Mai sur bon terreau ou fumier décomposé, à 2 cm de profondeur et à écartement de 15 cm entre lignes ou semer de Juin à Aout, en pépinière, sur de la bonne terre de jardin enrichie d’humus.

Opérations en culture

Repiquer les plants suffisamment développés à 40 cm entre les lignes et 30 cm sur le rang. Mettre en place en Juillet-Août en sol bien fumé et frais. Arrosage copieux par temps sec.Trois mois après le semis blanchir la chicorée en attachant les feuilles vers le haut pour maintenir le cœur à l’obscurité ou en recouvrant la plante d’un pot renversé ou d’une assiette.

Récolte

Cueillir 15 jours après l'opération de blanchiement du cœur.

Description

Similar to lettuce, mature white hearts will be less bitter and have a creamy yellow centre with darker green outside leaves. An ideal leaf to add to a mixed leaf salad to add taste and texture.

Sowing instructions

Seeds can be sown into peat pots/modules from May to August and transplanted when plants are 10-15 cm tall, at 30cm square spacing. Alternatively seeds can be sown directly into very finely prepared soil, in rows about 13mm deep and 30cm between rows. Cover the seeds lightly with soil.

Growing technique

If seeding direct thin plants to 30cm apart in the row. Water after sowing directly or transplanting and keep plants moist at all times.

Harvesting

Harvesting of mature hearts can commence after about 80 days from sowing. To reduce the bitter flavour the plants should be blanched in succession. Once blanched the hearts will deteriorate in quality, so blanching should be carried out to fit in with harvesting requirements. Blanching is achieved by tying up the lower leaves to cover the plant or by placing a 25 cm size pot over the plants and blocking the drainage hole to exclude light.
