Rosier Young Lycidas

Une variété classique de la Rose Ancienne. Les fleurs sont assez grandes et profondément évasées même lorsque la rose est entièrement ouverte; les nombreux pétales sont arrangés de façon charmante et plutôt décontractée. La couleur est différente par rapport aux autres Roses Anglaises ; un mélange de rose, magenta et rouge foncé. Sur la boucle extérieure de la fleur, les pétales ont tendance à porter sur le violet clair bien que les pétales soient d’un coloris argenté sur leurs revers.

Les fleurs inclinent la tête avec élégance et sont produites séparément ou en petits groupes sur des tiges vigoureuses. Ce rosier peut atteindre 1m20 de hauteur jusqu’à 90cm de largeur et deviendra un arbuste attrayant, buissonnant et très sain.

Cette variété dégage un parfum délicieux qui change nettement avec l’âge mûr de la fleur. Il commence en tant que thé pur puis passe à un mélange de thé et de Rose Ancienne avec un soupçon de bois de cèdre.

‘Young Lycidias’ serait un excellent choix pour s’associer aux Roses Anglaises et aux Roses Anciennes dans une bordure de rosiers ou dans un mixed border, mélangée avec les plantes vivaces.

The John Milton Society nous a demandé d’appeler ce rosier afin de commémorer l’anniversaire 400ième de la naissance du poète John Milton. ‘Lycidas’ est un des plus excellents poèmes courts de la langue anglaise/qu’on trouve dans la langue anglaise. Chose intéressante, c’était Milton qui a introduit le mot ‘parfum/fragrance’ dans la langue anglaise.

Rosa Young Lycidas

This is a variety of classic Old Rose beauty. The flowers are quite large and deeply cupped even when fully open; the many petals arranged in a charming, rather informal way. Their colour is new to English Roses; a blend of very deep magenta, pink and red – the outer petals tending towards light purple – although this is in contrast to the outside of the petals, which are quite silvery in appearance.

The flowers nod gracefully and are produced singly or in small groups on vigorous stems. Its growth will build up to form an attractive, bushy shrub of perhaps 1.2m/4ft tall by 90cm/3ft across.

There is a delicious fragrance that changes markedly with the age of the flower; starting as a pure Tea scent and changing to a blend of Tea and Old Rose, with intriguing hints of cedar wood.

‘Young Lycidas’ would be an excellent choice to associate with English Roses and Old Roses in a rose border or in a mixed border with hardy plants.

We were asked by The Friends of Milton's Cottage to name this rose to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of the poet John Milton. ‘Lycidas’, one of the finest short poems in the English language. Interestingly, it was Milton who introduced the word ‘fragrance’ into the English language.

Bare root roses are available from October (week 41) through to March. Some varieties do sell out due to popularity.
